A video trending on social media could be the reason why the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested controversial crossdresser, Bobrisky.

In the video, Bobrisky was seen splashing money at an event.

Early this morning, word emerged that the famed crossdresser had been detained by the EFCC. According to the report, he was apprehended in Pinnock Estate in Lagos State on April 3, 2024, at 3 p.m.

Confirming his detention, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission revealed on Thursday why the commission arrested Bobrisky. EFFC alleged that the crossdresser had been detained for currency mutilation and misuse of the Naira. EFCC revealed that the Bobrisky is now at their facility in Lagos and would be charged in court soon.

The commission has now posted his mugshot along with a post that sheds further insight on his arrest. The EFCC said on its official Instagram page that it had detained Bobrisky after a video showed him spraying and flaunting wads of fresh Naira notes at the premiere of Eniola Ajao’s film, Ajanaku, leaked online.

An investigation found that he had committed the claimed act at other previous centers and parties at various times.

Following his detention, netizens discovered a video of him spraying money at Eniola Ajao’s movie premiere, with many defending him, noting that it was a common practice at Nigerian parties to spray money at events.

The controversial Internet celebrity revealed that he began crossdressing as a marketing technique while selling unisex clothing as an undergraduate at the University of Lagos.

In an honest interview with maverick musician Charly Boy, Bobrisky said that he had no idea that cross-dressing would lead to him being transgender.

He said:

“About nine years ago, I was at the University of Lagos studying Accounting. I also had a side hustle, I was selling unisex clothes. Most times I try the female wears on myself and I love the outfits.

“From there, I moved to female hairstyles to makeup and more women were patronising my business. So I decided to keep crossdressing since it was lucrative.

“I wasn’t thinking I was going to do it for a very long time. Initially, it was just a marketing strategy but people were complimenting me that I look better as a woman than a man. That’s how I ended up being Bobrisky.”

His arrest comes just a few days after Muyiwa Adejobi, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Nigerian Police Force, addressed concerns over transgender people in Nigeria.

Notable figures in this discourse include Bobrisky, James Brown, and Jay Boogie. Adejobi provided insight into the complexity of crossdresser prosecution, highlighting that some cases pose major evidentiary issues.

He used rape as an example, pointing out that the judicial system requires numerous aspects to be proven.

Failure to offer adequate evidence on any front may result in the dismissal of a case in court.

Contrary to popular assumption, the PRO stated that cross-dressing is not prohibited in Nigeria, at least to his knowledge.

He underlined that, while there may be complaints against crossdressers, these accusations are frequently based on ‘natural offenses’.

To win a conviction, the prosecution must offer compelling evidence to back up these assertions.
