Emeka Ihedioha, a previous governor of Imo State, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
In his resignation letter, which was directed to the PDP chairman in Mbutu Ward, Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of the state, Ihedioha explained that his decision was driven by a misalignment between his personal beliefs and the current direction of the main opposition party.
Despite his departure from the PDP, the former governor emphasized his unwavering commitment to promoting democracy and good governance in the country.
Ihedioha highlighted his significant contributions to the party’s growth and development since its establishment in 1998.
However, he expressed disappointment with recent developments within the PDP, stating that it has strayed from its fundamental principles. Specifically, he raised concerns about the party’s failure to implement internal reforms, adhere to its regulations, and effectively challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
“Regrettably, in recent times, the party has taken on a path that is at variance with my personal beliefs. Despite my attempt to offer counsel, the party is, sadly, no longer able to carry out internal reforms, enforce its own rules or offer credible opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress.’
“It is in the light of the foregoing, that I am compelled to offer my resignation from the People’s Democratic Party effective immediately.
“While the decision was difficult to take, I, however, believe that it is the right one. Despite this resignation, I will always be available to offer my services towards the deepening of democracy and good governance in Nigeria”, the letter added.
Recall that At the party’s national caucus meeting in Abuja on Wednesday evening, April 17, both Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, were in attendance.
This meeting serves as a precursor to the party’s National Executive Committee meeting, which is set to take place on Thursday, April 18.
It is noteworthy that this is the first time Wike, the former Rivers state governor, has participated in a PDP meeting since the presidential election last year.
Wike had previously been at odds with the PDP leadership and did not lend his support to the party’s candidate, Atiku, during the 2023 presidential election.
In addition to his opposition to Atiku’s campaign, Wike’s decision to serve in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet further strained his relationship with key stakeholders within the party.
The upcoming NEC meeting, scheduled for tomorrow, will address crucial matters concerning the party’s leadership and will also delve into discussions regarding Wike’s involvement in party activities.
