President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria has issued an instruction to the Federal Ministry of Education to incorporate graduates from the National Open University (NOUN) into the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

He emphasized that individuals within the eligible age range should be permitted by law to contribute to the nation through their service.

This directive was announced by President Tinubu during his address at the 13th convocation ceremony of the university, which took place on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at the Convocation Arena of the University in Jabi, Abuja.

Biodun Saliu, the Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), represented the President and also revealed the resolution of the longstanding issue concerning the admission of NOUN law graduates to law schools across the country.

“With the changing demographics of our great nation, the government has recognised the importance of allowing NOUN graduates to participate in the NYSC scheme.
The president emphasized that the event was more than just a recognition of the graduates’ academic achievements; it also underscored the significant impact of Open and Distance Education (ODL) on the country’s educational system.
Consequently, he reiterated his government’s dedication to improving ODL to increase higher education opportunities nationwide, stressing the importance of ODL in achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“We will continue to do this in order to improve quality, access and affordability.

“Government is, therefore, committed through the Federal Ministry of Education and the NUC to provide the enabling environment to ensure a good delivery of this mode of education in Nigeria,” Tinubu added.
The president expressed his satisfaction with the fact that NOUN has emerged as a key player in promoting the government’s dedication to attaining educational objectives through ICT.
In other news, Ayo Ayalowo, a development economist, has emphasized the need for President Bola Tinubu’s administration and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission to abandon bands A, B, and C due to the insufficient power supply experienced by Nigerians. This statement was made during an interview on Channels Television on Tuesday. Ayalowo highlighted that the escalating prices of energy sources, such as electricity and diesel, significantly contribute to the high inflation rates in Nigeria.

He suggested that the government should reconsider the recently announced 240% increase in electricity tariffs for Band A customers who receive 20 hours of power supply.

Ayalowo emphasized that despite the tariff hike, Nigerians are still not receiving adequate power supply.

He stated:

“The energy prices, especially this Band A, Band B, and C nonsense, need to be jettisoned. And a sensible approach must be taken so that Nigerians can enjoy electricity at a reasonable cost. NERC needs to go back and rejig the tariff and stop the nonsense band classification because Nigerians are still not getting power supply”, he stated.
