Nnamdi Kanu, leader of IPOB on Monday appeared before the Federal High Court in Abuja for the resumption of his terrorism trial.
Recall that Kanu has been in DSS custody since his repatriation from Kenya to Nigeria in July 2021.
In 2021, the Federal Government brought an updated 15-count terrorist and treasonable criminal accusation against Kanu. After making a decision on Kanu’s attorney’s preliminary objection, which questioned the validity of the allegations, trial judge Justice Murtala-Nyako dismissed eight of the fifteen counts.
The head of IPOB had filed a preliminary objection seeking the complete dismissal of the accusation, and he had contested the trial court’s decision to sustain seven of the fifteen charges.
The Federal Government committed a mistake by extraditing Kanu to Nigeria, the court of appeals said in dismissing the accusations against him. On December 15, 2023, the Supreme Court issued an order to continue Mr. Kanu’s terrorist trial before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Recall that Omoyele Sowore, the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate in 2019 and 2023, has reaffirmed his call for the release of Nnamdi Kanu.
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader has been in jail for over three years now.
Sowore made the call during an interview with Arise Television on Thursday.
The #RevolutionNow activist argued that there would be no peace or progress in Nigeria without justice.
“Let me use this opportunity to ask for the release of Nnamdi Kanu. It’s time that reasoning prevail over the issue of Nnamdi Kanu. This whole thing was unnecessary.
“If you’re not going to continue with Buhari’s policies of ruining the economy, destroying the dollars, don’t continue with his repressive policies.
“It’s time to apologize to all the persons that Buhari touched in the last eight years of his administration and prosecute all the officials used in committing atrocities under his government.” He said
Kanu has been in jail since June 2021, when the dictatorship of former President Muhammadu Buhari, in concert with the Kenyan government, abducted him in Kenya and returned him to Nigeria in contravention of national and international laws.
In other news, Joeboy, a popular Nigerian musician, has spoken up about his early life problems.
He recounted a time when he worked at a pure water factory while on strike at university.
The Nigerian musician, who studied human resources and personal management, spoke of his difficulties finding work during a three-month university strike.
Faced with the scary possibility of unemployment, he ultimately found work as a marketer in a pure water facility in Lagos.
“I was looking so hard for a job and couldn’t find any. Is this how I’m going to end up when I finish school?” Joeboy said during the interview.
Joeboy described his life as a “miracle,” stating that despite some advice against signing him, Mr. Eazi, the head of his former record company, took a risk on him, resulting in his surprise signing to Empawa, where his musical career took off.
Joeboy emphasized the unexpected aspect of his accomplishment, claiming that not even his parents had anticipated his entry into the music industry.
Despite early skepticism, Joeboy has gone on to accomplish what he claims to be “the best label deal in Afrobeats history in Nigeria.”
