The skin-lightening product, Caro White Skin Lightening Beauty lotion has been marked by the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
NAFDAC issued a warning to Nigerians against using the product. The European Union (EU) Rapid Alert System for Dangerous Non-Food Products (RAPEX) has also issued a recall for Caro White Skin Lightening Beauty Lotion.
NAFDAC stated that the product does not comply with the Cosmetic Products Regulation as it contains a high concentration of Kojic Acid, exceeding the allowable maximum concentration of one percent.
This information was shared in a statement on NAFDAC’s website, titled ‘Public Alert No. 15/2023 – Alert on the Recall of Ivorian Made Skin Lightening Beauty Lotion’, which was obtained by Channels Television.
The EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) has concluded the presence of a significant amount of Kojic Acid. This has raised concerns about the potential endocrine-disrupting properties that may be associated with its use.
Although the product is not included in the NAFDAC database, the committee strongly advises importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers to be cautious and vigilant when dealing with this product.
“The product authenticity and physical condition should be carefully checked. Members of the public in possession of the product should discontinue the sale or use and submit stock to the nearest NAFDAC office,” the statement read in part.
Healthcare providers and individuals were urged to notify the closest National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control office of any negative reactions encountered while using the product.
